5 Signs Your Security System Is Failing (That Nobody Notices)
Camera systems fail quietly. By the time you need the footage, the problem has been there for months.
The most dangerous security system is the one that looks like it's working. Cameras are mounted, the light is green, the monitor shows feeds. But when an incident happens and you need the footage, it isn't there.
1. You haven't pulled footage recently
If your team hasn't tested footage retrieval in the past 30 days, you don't actually know if the system is working. Recording failures, drive errors, and network interruptions don't announce themselves. The only way to know is to pull a clip.
2. Cameras are pointing at the wrong thing
Fixtures shift, merchandise moves, staff relocate counters. A camera that was aimed perfectly at installation may now be pointed at a shelf instead of a POS terminal. Walk the site and compare what each camera sees against what it should see.
3. Your NVR is older than five years
Hard drives in NVRs have a lifespan. After five years, drive failure rates increase significantly. A failing drive may record inconsistently or stop recording entirely, without triggering any visible alert.
4. Different systems in different locations
If your locations run three different VMS platforms, footage retrieval will be inconsistent at best. An LP investigation that requires clips from six sites becomes a different task in each location. Standardization isn't just operational, it's a security requirement.
5. No one is alerted when a camera goes offline
Health monitoring is the difference between knowing and finding out. If a camera goes offline and no one gets notified, the gap in coverage exists for as long as it takes someone to notice the monitor is missing a feed.
If any of these apply to your system, a security audit will document exactly what's working and what isn't, with a prioritized list of what to fix first.
